Driving in Albania: A Guide for Visitors

Once you have landed in Albania and picked up your rental car from the designated office, we wish you a safe and delightful journey.

For those navigating Albania’s roads for the first time, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the vehicle, understand Albania’s traffic regulations, and plan your routes carefully. A GPS or smartphone navigation app is highly recommended to help you navigate, especially in rural or mountainous areas where road signs may be less frequent.

In Albania, driving is on the right-hand side. A valid driving license from your home country is required, and depending on your country of origin, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Ensure that your rental car comes with mandatory equipment, including a reflective safety vest, a warning triangle, and a first-aid kit, as these are required by law.

While major cities like Tirana and Durrës are relatively well-connected by paved roads, traffic congestion can occur, especially during rush hours. Roads in rural and mountainous areas may be narrow, winding, and less maintained, so extra caution is advised. Be prepared for unexpected challenges, such as livestock or pedestrians crossing rural roads.

The speed limits in Albania are generally:

  • 40 km/h in urban areas,
  • 80 km/h on secondary roads, and
  • 110 km/h on highways.

These limits can vary depending on road conditions and signage, so always pay attention to local signs.

Fuel and Road Safety:

Fuel stations are readily available in cities and along main highways, but they can be sparse in more remote areas. Always monitor your fuel levels and plan stops in advance when traveling to less-populated regions.

Be cautious when driving in mountainous areas, especially during winter or rainy seasons, as roads may become slippery or icy. In these regions, it’s recommended to carry snow chains during colder months.

Traffic and Parking:

Driving habits in Albania can be unpredictable, with some drivers ignoring traffic rules, particularly in busy urban areas. Defensive driving is crucial. Parking is often limited in city centers, and paid parking zones are common in places like Tirana. Look for designated parking lots to avoid fines.

Unique Tips for Driving in Albania:

  1. Animals on the Road: Be alert for stray dogs, goats, or sheep, which often wander onto roads, especially in rural areas.
  2. Unmarked Roads: Some smaller roads may lack clear signage or lane markings, so drive cautiously and follow your navigation system.
  3. Roundabouts: Vehicles inside the roundabout generally have the right of way, but some drivers may not adhere to this rule.
  4. Tolls: There are no toll roads in Albania, but some mountain roads may have small maintenance fees.
  5. Lighting: In rural areas, roads may not be well-lit at night, so ensure your headlights are functioning properly and avoid night driving if possible.

Emergency Assistance:

If you need help while in Albania, don’t hesitate to contact our office. For emergencies, dial 112 for all emergency services. Be prepared to provide clear details of your location, as some rural areas may lack detailed addresses.

Enjoy exploring Albania’s beautiful landscapes, historic towns, and stunning coastline. Safe travels!
