Best UK trips for you and the family this autumn

The leaves are turning orange and brown, the nights are getting shorter and there’s a chill in the earlier hours. All that means one thing: autumn is approaching. After one of the hottest summers we’ve endured in recent years, it’s sad to see the back of summer, but there is a certain charm about autumn that we can all look forward to.

With days on the beach and picnics out of the equation, where can you go and what can you do throughout the colder season of autumn? Here are some of our favourite breaks and things to do through the autumn season:

Enchanted Forest, Pitlochry

Enchanted Forest is a popular autumn sound and light show held amongst the autumnal trees and nature in Faskally Wood, Pitlochry. Using the forest as a natural backdrop for a light show, you will experience a show like no other.

Current winner of UK’s Best Cultural Event, the Scottish Outdoor Leisure Award for Best Outdoor Festival as well as Scotland’s Best Large Event you can be sure of a warm welcome at this woodland wonderland that dazzles and delights.

The dates for the 2018 show are 4th October – 4th November 2018

Halloween at Warwick Castle, Warwick

Over two weeks, the castle will be hosting the ‘haunted castle’ event. Between 20th October and 4th November, there are family trails, a witch show and a horrible history maze in the daytime and even scarier activities when night falls.

In the six days leading up to Halloween, the medieval castle stays open until 10pm every night for an extra spook!

Alexandra Palace Firework Festival, London

The famous Firework Festival returns to Alexandra Palace on the 2nd and 3rd November. Including a beer festival with music acts, a circus show, fairground, bonfire and firework show. There is something for all members of the family and the event has been expanded for 2018.

Heritage Open Week, Bath

Every year during the autumn half term, museums and heritage attractions in Bath host special events and provide free entry to all ages. From late-night opening at the torch-lit Roman Baths to museum open days, immerse yourself and the family in the impressive history of Bath. In 2018, the event will take place from 27th October to 4th November.

Farne Island, Northumberland

Wildlife is the main draw on the Farne Islands, which are most famous for puffins, closely followed by the seals, plus many other types of birds, including shags, kittiwakes, razorbills, eider ducks and guillemots. You’ll see different things depending on what time of year you visit.

October is pupping season and towards the end of the month, it is peak time for our fluffy seal pups, they can be seen gathering on the rocks in their thousands, peaking at the end of this month.
