Information about driving in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Once you have landed in Bosnia & Herzegovina and picked up your rental car from the designated office, we wish you a safe and enjoyable journey!

In Bosnia & Herzegovina, driving is on the right-hand side. A valid driving license from your home country is required, and depending on your country of origin, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

The speed limits in Bosnia & Herzegovina are generally 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on secondary roads, and 120 km/h on highways, subject to change based on road conditions and signage.

Local driving habits may vary, and not all drivers strictly adhere to traffic rules, particularly in more rural areas. As a result, it's important to drive defensively and stay alert, especially in busy urban areas and on winding rural roads. Watching out for pedestrians and cyclists is essential, especially in urban areas where pedestrian crossings may not always be respected, and in rural areas where roads might be shared with cyclists or even livestock.

Many historic city centers in Bosnia & Herzegovina have narrow streets and limited parking availability. Therefore, it's advisable to park outside these areas and explore on foot. This is especially true in cities like Sarajevo and Mostar, where the old towns are best navigated by walking.

Outside of historic centers, driving and parking are generally straightforward. Modern parts of cities and towns usually have more accessible parking options, and road conditions tend to be better maintained.

While Bosnia & Herzegovina does not have a widespread toll road system, it’s still important to familiarize yourself with local driving regulations and road conditions.

By law, vehicles in Bosnia & Herzegovina must carry a reflective safety vest and a warning triangle. These should be used in case of breakdowns or accidents. But don’t worry – we take care of those if you choose our rental car!

If you need help during your stay in Bosnia & Herzegovina, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In case of emergencies, dial 112 for all emergency services.
