Mayor of London announces plans to tackle the capital’s toxic air

At the 60th anniversary of the Clean Air the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced plans to minimise the capital’s pollution problems.

The proposals cover in more detail the already announced plans for an Ultra-Low Emission Zone in central London. Previously planned to be introduced in 2020, Sadiq Khan has proposed that this is brought one year earlier to 2019. The Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) would also be stretched out to beyond central London in 2020 for motorcycles, cars and vans to the North and South circular and for lorries, busses and coaches London-wide.

Plans also include a £10 emissions surcharge on the most polluting vehicles entering central London from 2017. The charge would be given to all vehicles with pre-Euro 4 emission standards on top of the city’s congestion charge.

Sadiq commented: “With nearly 10,000 people dying early every year in London due to exposure to air pollution, cleaning up London’s toxic air is now an issue of life and death. Today we face another pollution public health emergency in London and now it’s our turn to act for the good of Londoners and for future generations to come.”

The proposals for an emissions surcharge in 2017 and an expansion on the 2020 ULEZ would be the biggest attempt to nullify the most polluting vehicles by any major city around the world.

As declared by Sadiq, there is still a long way to go to solve the problem. By hiring a car or van from Green Motion you play a part in helping to reducing emissions levels, while benefitting from better fuel economy.
