Ensuring your rental car is equipped with either winter tyres or snow chains is a must for navigating snowy and icy roads. 

Winter tyres are designed to stay flexible in freezing temperatures, giving you better traction when the roads get slick. While snow chains can be used as an alternative to winter tyres to provide essential grip.

In many ski destinations, winter tyres or snow chains aren’t just a suggestion - they’re often legally required during colder months. For example, in France, certain areas require snow chains or winter tyres from November 1 to March 31, with specific municipalities listed by local authorities. 

Always look out for road signs indicating when chains should be used.

Don’t forget! Once the road conditions improve, remove the chains to prevent any damage to your vehicle or the road.
 

Check Your Car’s Lights

In winter, visibility can be reduced, especially with shorter daylight hours. Before setting off, ensure your headlights and fog lights are in top shape. 

Many ski destinations, like Finland, require headlights to be on during the day to help other drivers see you, especially in snowy conditions. Even if it’s not mandatory, keeping them on in snowy or foggy conditions is always a good idea.

The key is to take it slow - smoothly accelerate, decelerate, and avoid any sudden turns or braking. If you find yourself on a particularly icy stretch or winding road, instead of slamming on the brakes, use engine braking (downshifting) for a gentler stop.

Keep an eye out for bridges and overpasses. These tend to freeze quicker than regular roads, so slow down and be extra cautious in these areas.

Pack Warm Layers and Essentials

What should you consider packing for a ski holiday? When heading to colder regions, warm clothing is a must:

•    Thermal clothing e.g., thick ski socks, thermal leggings
•    Hats
•    Gloves
•    Scarves
•    Warm jackets

Additionally, pack an emergency kit with essentials such as extra food, water, and a first-aid kit. It’s always better to be prepared for any surprises the winter weather may throw at you.
