Enjoy your car hire in Helsinki

If this is your first time driving a car in Helsinki, our advice is to stay calm and take your time. As already mentioned, remember that you must drive on the right-hand side of the road. We also recommend for your own peace of mind to consider hiring a GPS to ensure you can navigate around Helsinki with ease (ask at the rental counter for details).

Traffic jams are relatively unheard of in Finland, at least in the scale that visitors from busier countries and / or towns would consider normal. However, do be aware that instead of stopping due to vehicle congestion that you will instead of have to be wary of wild animals roaming the road.

An easy way to recognise foreign tourists at Finnish petrol stations is where they leave their car after filling when they go into the station to pay – the Finnish move their vehicles to the side for politeness while many visitors leave their vehicles at the pump. This is a common courtesy in Finland.

When travelling on the motorways, the speed limit is 120 km/h and 100 km/h on major highways however be aware that in the winter months the general speed is limited to 80 km/h. The speed limit outside the city and in built-up areas is 50 mph unless started otherwise. For your own safety it is important that you obey the local traffic and speed restrictions.

Should you require any assistance while in Finland, Finnish emergency services can be contacted by calling 112 for police, fire fighters and medical services.
