Volkswagen to produce a fully electric cargo van

Volkswagen have greenlighted the production of a fully electric cargo van which has been inspired by the original Transport line-up launched back in the 1950s.

The car, named the I.D. Buzz, is due to launch in 2022 and will be a part of VW’s electric vehicle line-up.

The I.D. range will feature a modular EV platform, which packages the batteries and drive systems into the floorplan. This then offers a completely flat area in the back with a large cargo-carrying capacity. The model is only marginally larger than a standard T6 wheelbase Transporter.

It is still a bit too early to make assumptions on the vehicle’s technology levels, but the I.D. Buzz will have a high-performance four-wheel drive with a range of 375 miles per full charge – 80% of which can be recovered within 30 minutes.

Volkswagen have also hinted that it may offer a high level of autonomy which would be well-suited to both long-distance and urban deliveries.
