Before renting - choose wisely

When you collect your vehicle - plan ahead
We recommend planning your route before you leave, especially when renting a car at an airport. Are you sure where you're meeting your car rental representative or where the rental desk is? Your confirmation email will have the contact information for the location, so we suggest saving the number in your phone ahead of time.

Have the correct documents ready. We try and keep the check in process as easy as possible but we do need to process certain information for legal reasons so having these ready ahead of time can help speed up the process. Make sure you have your booking details ready, along with your driving license, passport and valid credit card.

Complete a vehicle check. It's essential when you are taken to your car you complete a Vehicle Condition Report (VCR) and note any existing damage, paying particular attention to the five damage hotspots. If you don't report this, you may be liable for these damages when you return the vehicle. We don't want you to get caught out, so we've put together a handy vehicle inspection video to help you check everything through.

While you rent - take care
Unfortunately you may be liable for any damage caused to a vehicle in your care, and this will vary depending on the product you choose. A large proportion of damages usually happens in car parks, so be careful. When space is limited, park further away and walk a little further to your destination.

If you're visiting from a country that drives on the left, such as the UK or Australia, this will require some adjustment, especially at roundabouts and when making turns at intersections. Most rental cars are automatic, but manual transmissions are still common — so make sure to request an automatic in advance if that’s your preference.

Helsinki has a modern road network, with wide boulevards and multi-lane streets in newer areas, and narrower, often one-way roads in older city districts. Traffic moves in an orderly and predictable way. Finnish drivers are known for their patience and rule-abiding habits. Yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks is mandatory and universally observed. However, one notable challenge for foreign drivers is the presence of trams (streetcars), which have absolute right of way — even over cars turning left or going straight through an intersection. It's critical not to block tram tracks or attempt to overtake a tram that is unloading passengers.

Speed limits in Helsinki are strictly enforced. In urban areas, the default speed limit is 50 km/h, though many residential areas and the city center have lower limits of 30 km/h, especially near schools or pedestrian zones. On ring roads and motorways outside the city, the limits rise to 80–100 km/h, and up to 120 km/h on some highways in summer months — though winter limits are typically reduced. Speed cameras are common, and Finland has one of the highest rates of automatic enforcement in Europe, so sticking to the speed limit isn’t just a matter of safety — it’s also essential to avoid fines.
