Car Rental and Driving in Budapest
Driving in Budapest is generally straightforward, although it requires attention to detail, especially in the downtown area where streets can be narrow and traffic is frequent.
Driving is on the right-hand side, and all passengers must wear seatbelts. Mobile phone use is prohibited unless you have a hands-free device. Dipped headlights must be used at all times outside of urban areas, even during daylight hours. A valid driver’s license is required, and depending on your country of origin, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Ensure your rental car is equipped with mandatory safety items, such as a warning triangle and reflective vest.
Budapest’s road network is generally well-maintained, but traffic can get congested during peak hours (7–9 AM and 4–6 PM). Watch out for trams, which have the right of way, and always adhere to traffic signs and regulations.
Speed limits in Hungary are 50 km/h (31 mph) in urban areas, 90 km/h (56 mph) on rural roads, 110 km/h (68mph) on on expressways, and 130 km/h (81 mph) on highways.
Hungarian highways require an electronic vignette (e-matrica) for tolls, which can be purchased online or at fuel stations. We'll make sure that your rental car is equipped with one!
In downtown Budapest, parking is mostly paid and controlled by zones. Pay attention to the colored signage indicating how long you can park and the applicable fees. Parking garages are widely available and often the best choice for longer stays. Free parking is scarce in the city center.
Fuel stations are plentiful in Budapest and along major highways. Most accept credit/debit cards, but it’s wise to check in rural areas. Having some local currency (HUF) on hand can be useful for smaller fuel stations or self-service pumps.
