Car Hire Tijuana Airport – Driving Around Tijuana
Renting a car at TIJ gives you excellent flexibility to explore the Baja California region, including Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, or even heading south toward scenic road trips along the peninsula.
Driving in Tijuana can be dynamic—traffic is busy, signage may switch between English and Spanish, and local driving styles require alertness. Roads are generally in good condition, especially in central areas and the main highways. The speed limit in cities is usually 60 km/h (37 mph) and up to 110 km/h (68 mph) on highways.
Mexico drives on the right-hand side, and seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. It is essential to drive defensively, be cautious at intersections, and look out for topes (speed bumps) which are common but not always marked.
If you’re unfamiliar with the area, renting a GPS or using a reliable offline map app is highly recommended due to occasionally inconsistent mobile coverage outside the city.
If you're planning to cross into the U.S., note that most Mexican rental cars cannot be taken across the border, unless the agency offers special arrangements and insurance.
A rental car opens the door to some of Baja’s best escapes:
Rosarito Beach – Just 30 minutes south, great for surfing, relaxing on the beach, or horseback riding.
Ensenada – About 1.5 to 2 hours away, famous for its seafood, wineries, and the scenic Pacific Coast drive.
Valle de Guadalupe – Mexico’s top wine-producing region, only 2 hours away and filled with boutique vineyards and gourmet food.
Tecate – A charming small town known for its brewery and calm vibe, located about 1 hour east.
