Driving in Oman is safe, modern, and well-organized, especially in and around Salalah. The roads are paved, well-signed (in Arabic and English), and traffic is generally calm. Roundabouts are common, and rules are respected.
Oman drives on the right-hand side, and road quality is excellent. A valid driver’s license from your home country is accepted for up to 3 months for most nationalities, but carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) is still recommended for smooth interactions at checkpoints or in case of incidents.
Speed Limits are 40–60 km/h (25–37 mph) in urban areas, 80–100 km/h (50–62 mph) in rural roads, and up to 120 km/h (75 mph) on highways.
Speed cameras are frequent, especially on major routes, and fines for violations can be high. Oman has zero tolerance for drinking and driving, and seatbelts are mandatory.
Drivers in Salalah tend to be respectful, but wild camels and goats are common on rural roads—drive cautiously, especially at dusk.
Navigation apps work well, but mobile data may be patchy in remote areas. Offline maps are useful for mountain and desert areas like Jebel Samhan or Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter).
Fuel in Oman is inexpensive and available at modern stations in and around Salalah. Stations are full-service, and many accept cards, though cash (Omani rial – OMR) is still preferred in some places.
Parking is easy in Salalah. Most hotels, attractions, and beaches have free parking. In city areas, on-street parking is usually free or metered with clearly marked zones.
