Important tips - driving a rental car in Kittilä
Right side of road
Remember to drive on the right side of the road in Finland so that there is no risk of collision with oncoming traffic. Note that pedestrians can also walk on the right side of the road in Finland.
Speed limits
It is important for you and others that you follow the speed limits. If the weather is bad, drive slower. In the cities the speed limit is usually 50 km/h and outside the cities the speed limit is 80 km/h unless otherwise stated. On motorways the speed limit is 100-120 km/h. Note however that during the winter months the general speed is limited to 80 km/h.
During cold weather

Note that the road may be icy and slippery, even if it does not look like it. Be sure to leave enough distance to the car ahead and drive slower. Keep the car heating device on when it is cold outside so you can see out the windows. Check that the rental car has a warning triangle and make sure you have enough warm clothing with you for an emergency.
Use of lights
Always remember to use headlights. When you drive on a dark road with no street lights, use full beams. But switch the full beams to the headlights because of the respondent or you drive near the car ahead.
See the sights
If you want to stop to see something, be sure to stop in a safe place. Don’t ever leave the car in the dark on the road! Remember that hazard lights may only be used in an emergency.
Off-roading and snowmobile trails
Note that GPS or phone navigation can guide you off the road. Driving on snowmobile trails, cross-country trails and elsewhere off the road is prohibited.
Animals on the road
There are a lot of animals on the road in Finland, so be careful when driving. Be especially careful of reindeer and moose. Slow down if you see an animal near the road. Reindeers and mooses often move in the herd. Call the emergency number 112 if you are driving in a crash with an animal.
