9 out of 10 people live in places where air pollution exceeds safety guidelines

A staggering 9 out of 10 people in the world live in places where air pollution is exceeding safety guidelines.

This puts people at greater risk of heart disease, cancer and strokes according to the World Health Organization.

A model which measures air quality by using satellite data along with traditional ground measurements has shown that around 92% of the world’s population are living in areas where the air is polluted above WHO’s limits.

Air pollution continues to affect the health of the more vulnerable groups of people – such as children, older adults and women.

The World Health Organization have stated that nearly 3 million deaths each year are linked directly to the individuals exposure to air pollution, with nearly 90% of air polluted deaths occurring in either low to middle income countries.
