Attitudes changing towards marine sanctuaries

The earth is on the edge of a sea change. Currently, our oceans are relatively wild and uncultivated, without the noticeable human footprint which is more obvious on our land; however, man-made dangers plaguing our oceans have grown, such as climate change, plastic and over-fishing.

Nonetheless, in the last few years we have seen a flood of new attitudes and, as a result, new and / or improved marine sanctuaries, including reserves near Hawaii and New Caledonia – each covering around 500,000 sq mi - while the UK has recently approved a 322,000 sq mi reserve around the Pitcairn Islands.

In addition, earlier this month the US president, Barak Obama, established the largest ocean sanctuary on the plant – Hawaii’s Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument - by expanding the existing Marine National Monument by over 442,000 sq mi.

The trend of reserving our oceans has also been backed by Chile and New Zealand with hopes that further countries will follow suit by coming on-board, promoting and introducing healthier aquatic habitats.

Green Motion car rental takes its environmental policy seriously, championing best practices and attitudes to ensure that our impact on the environment is kept to a minimum.
