Jerry Brown, California’s governor, has extended the state’s boldest climate change law by another ten years as the US state continues to chart its goal in reducing carbon pollution.
The legislation was signed in a Los Angeles park on Thursday and expands on California’s 2006 law which set the goal of reducing emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.
California is currently set to meet or perhaps even exceed the target, with steps being put into place such as restricting carbon content, encouraging the purchasing of electric vehicles and enforcing tax on pollution.
The new law signed goes even further than this by endeavouring to reduce emissions 40% below 1990’s level by 2030. The governor called it the most determined target set by any government in North America.
