EasyJet Follows In Green Motion’s Eco Footsteps

Much like low emission car rental company Green Motion International, budget airline EasyJet have announced that they are dedicating their efforts to the plight of Global Warming. CEO Johan Lundgren recently announced that his company and staff would be working to offset their carbon footprint in an attempt to compensate for the fuel used on each of their 1,500+ average daily flights.

Currently, air travel only accounts for about 2.5 % of global carbon dioxide emissions a year compared to the average 4.6 produced by the average gasoline vehicle. However, more recent studies claim that the rapid growth in air travel, and in turn plane emissions, could mean that by 2050 aviation emissions will take up 25% off the global designated Carbon Budget. A ‘Carbon Budget’ refers to the finite amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted over time, before resulting in dangerous levels of global warming.

Easy Jet have released the following pledge to the public, earlier this week -

‘’every flight we operate, we’ll offset the carbon it produces from the fuel used, by investing in projects that include the planting of trees or protection against deforestation, production of renewable energies including solar power and wind, and working with local communities on how to reduce emissions in their way of life.’’

The company accepts that carbon offsetting is just an interim measure whilst ecological and technological advances are developed but insist that this is the best method to assist with the climate change crisis. Company heads have also referred to other carbon-reducing measures such as taxiing on one engine or removing weight from our aircraft, both of which will use less fuel than the average flight.

EasyJet are the first major airline to enforce these big changes, making them the most sustainable form of air travel presently. The Airline can be found in all major airport globally, including all UK airports, much like the low emission car rental company Green Motion.

This news comes shortly after Green Motion UK announces their status as the Uk's only Carbon Neutral car rental company, making it a month of accomplishment in the ecotourism sector.

Green Motion would like to congratulate EasyJet on their efforts to combat their carbon footprint and thank them for joining the fight against climate change!
