Fireworks for New Year’s Eve contributed to dangerous pollution levels in Germany.

Pollution in Munich briefly reached 26 times the EU recommended daily limit which is set at 50 micrograms of particulates per cubic metre of air. Add this to the bleak weather which meant that the pollutants lingered in the air for an extended period.

Figures have suggested that the fireworks displays emitted around 4,000 tonnes of particulates into the atmosphere, which is equal to 15% of vehicle emissions yearly.

These figures have prompted calls to forbid private fireworks parties in the future.
