Malta's Azure Window has collapsed

Malta's famous rock formation, Azure Window, has collapsed into the sea after a spate of heavy storms. Azure Window had appeared in many films and TV series, including Game of Thrones. Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, has said that the news is "heartbreaking". A report made in 2013 did determine that the collapse was inevitable due to unavoidable erosion, but stated that it was not in any imminent danger. Malta's authorities did take preventative measures to ensure that the famous arch was preserved for as long as possible, including adding signs and a fine to stop people from walking across the landmark but they were often ignored.

Whilst the loss of this stunning landmark is devastating, there is a second, less well-known arch at nearby Wied il-Mielah. Malta is an incredibly beautiful country, rich with history and culture, which should definitely be high on your list of places to visit.
