New research indicates high levels of air pollution affect sleep quality

New research, which was presented at the ATS 2017 International Conference, indicates that high levels of air pollution can, overtime, get in the way of a good night’s sleep.

The participants were divided into 4th's, with a quarter experiencing the highest levels of pollution compared to the quarter who experienced the lowest levels of pollution.

The study found that the group with the highest levels of traffic-related pollution over 5 years had an almost 60% increase in low sleep efficiency compared to those with the lowest levels of traffic-related pollution.

Likewise, the group with the highest exposure to fine-particle pollution had an almost 50% increase in the likelihood of low sleep efficiency.

The findings indicate that individuals who are exposed to higher levels of air pollution are being affected not only by heart and lung disease but also by sleep quality. Improving air quality is a necessity to improving health.
