Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi combining their platforms to reduce the price of EV's

The Nikkei newspaper has stated that Nissan Motor Co., Renault SA and Mitsubishi Motors Crop are going to be combining their electric vehicle platforms in an effort to dramatically reduce EV prices. The goal is for their EV’s to be compatible, in price, to their conventional gasoline counterparts.

The news comes amid Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor also stating that they are aiming to mass produce their battery electric cars.

Renault and Nissan have been very vocal in their support of zero-emission technology however they have struggled to keep the cost down as they developed each of their electric vehicles separately.

Renault and Mitsubishi, which recently came under the control of Nissan, will employ the same vehicle platform as Nissan’s remodelled electric Leaf which is expected to go on sale around 2018.

The 3 companies will share key components, such as the motor, inverter and battery, which is expected to lower the Leaf’s price by around a 5th.
