Green Motion Launches in New Zealand
Your Gateway to Exploring New Zealand's Natural Wonders
Germany is going to sail the Polarstern, a 120 mile long research vessel, into the sea-ice at the top of the world just to let it get stuck so that it can drift to the North Pole.
The 2,500km (1,550m) trip is set to begin in 2019 and it is likely that it will take a year.
Researchers are hoping to discover important insights on the region where the climate is changing the fastest. In January, the extent of the Arctic sea-ice was the lowest ever recorded for that month, with temperatures a few degrees above the long-term average.
The €63m (£54m / $67m) expedition is nearly all funded with other European states such as the UK as well as the Americans and Russians also being involved.
