San Diego City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to commence with the Pure Water San Diego project

The San Diego City Council have approved a $3 billion plan to recycle the US city’s wastewater into drinking water.

The council member’s voted unanimously on Tuesday to commence with the Pure Water San Diego project.

The project will investigate if and/or how the expansion of the north city water reclamation plant will affect the environment.

However, not all member’s supported the project with some stating that they did not have enough information yet to proceed.

At present, the recycling facility produces around 1 million gallons of water per day which is employed for irrigation purposes. If the expansion is completed as planned, it will reuse the water which will be put into the San Vicente Reservoir, with the recycled water being cleaner than the water which is already in the reservoir.

It is proposed that eventually the facility will produce around 15 million gallons of water each day which would make the Californian city's water supply more sustainable.

If the project’s Environmental Impact Report is approved, construction is due to commence in 2019.
