Every year, concern grows for the state of our Planet, but what are you doing to help? Green Motion have put together a few ideas on how together, we can do our collective part to save our Earth whilst saving time and a bit of money too.
- Did you know that Pressure Cookers can not only take up to 70% less time to cook a meal than a conventional oven but will also save a lot more energy than an electric oven that uses up to 2.7 pounds of C02 every hour compared to the 0.9 pounds of C02 for seven hours that a pressure cooker uses?
- Turn that oven off! 5 minutes before your meal is ‘ready’, turn off your oven. The meal will continue to cook without using the energy from the oven and be a perfect temperature upon serving.
- Did you know that over 250,000 Tonnes of the food that we throw away every year is still edible? Not only would this help feed the 8.4 million in the population struggling to eat, but by only purchasing what you will use, or by simply freezing your leftovers, you can have a huge impact on landfill sites and non-recyclable waste used to package these products.
- After washing your fruit and vegetables, be sure to use the left-over water to feed your plants, it takes a matter of seconds and sorts two jobs at once!
- Unplug that Smart TV! Your Google, Apple or Smart TV will still be using electricity even when you press the ‘off’ button. Un-plug your device at the wall and save yourself some money whilst you conserve energy too.
- Summer’s Coming! – Get those garments out on the line instead of bundling it into your dryer. Clothes dryers are one of the most energy consuming appliances in your house, don’t let it build up your bills!
- Take that Junk out of your Trunk. By removing unnecessary items from your car boot or removing your roof rack, you will in turn reduce the amount of fuel your car is using. Lighter car = less fuel.
- Add a few plants around your house to improve the air quality in your home. Plants capture CO2 during their growing process and release oxygen. This process of CO2 sequestration compensates for the negative impact on the environment by “cleaning” the atmosphere of greenhouse gases, and therefore reducing the effect of climate change.
- On average, people living in Europe spend £60-£100 per year on cut flowers and indoor plants. Cut flowers usually only last a few days and are then disposed of. Why not try and elongate the life of your flowers and reduce waste by dropping a shot of Vodka into the vase– we’re not joking, it really works!
- We all hate receiving Junk Mail through the post - get your name taken off of these annoying mailing lists by visiting dmachoice.org and reduce the amount of paper waste at the same time!
- Don’t waste your money on expensive chemical-induced teeth whitening treatments - instead, use an old banana peel to un-stain your nashers. Simply rub the inside of a banana peel across both rows of your teeth for a couple of minutes and leave for a further ten, rinse this off with a toothbrush and voila!
- Go Green with Green Motion! Have you ever wondered what it is like to drive an energy efficient vehicle? Why not try one out for the day from your nearest Green Motion station, or do one better and spend your next holiday travelling in an eco-vehicle and show the other tourists how it’s done – www.greenmotion.com Don’t forget that every Green Motion direct booking contributes to our Green Heart foundation that supports re-forestation in Costa Rica - do your bit and go Green Motion.
