Tesla’s Model X and Model S are extending their ranges as well as an enhanced Ludicrous Mode – thanks to a new battery option.
Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, said that Tesla is going to be offering a new 100 kw hour battery option for the Model X and S vehicles which have the newer Ludicrous Modes. This battery option extends the range of the Model S to 315 miles per charge – making it the first and currently only EV car to exceed a range of 300 miles – while the Model X will be able to extend its range to 289 miles.
The upgrade will also allow the Model S P100D Ludicrous to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, making it the world’s 3rd fastest production car, just behind the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder.
The Model X, on the other hand, will become the world’s quickest SUV with the new battery, having the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.
The upgrade for those who already own a Model S or a Model X P90D can be purchased for $20,000 (roughly £15,131) however those who have ordered a P90D but have not yet received it can upgrade for just $10,000 (roughly £7,565). The reason why those who already own a Tesla vehicle will be charged more is because the battery has to be recycled.
Tesla is gearing up to expect some competition in the coming months and years as Volkswagen is believed to reveal an EV car in October which, if humours can be trusted, could have as much as 372 miles of range. Porsche is also working on an EV with 300 miles of range to be released in 2019.
