A new £10 T-Charge has come into force in London for vehicles that do not pass the EURO IV Exhaust Standard, which predominantly effects diesel and petrol vehicles made before 2006. The charge is in addition to the current Congestion charge and covers the same area, which means that some drivers could end up paying £21.50 to drive into the capital.

Opinion has been divided on whether this new charge will make the needed difference to London's highly polluted air. Whilst many feel that this a good step in the right direction, as it will discourage drivers from bringing cars with high emissions into London, others feel that this is unfairly targeting London's poorest residents, and could effect local, small businesses.

Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has said that this is "part of a package of measures" being undertaken, in response to the "health crisis in London caused by the poor quality air."

Figures have shown that around 9,000 Londoner's each year die prematurely due to health issues related to the pollution, such as people who suffer with asthma, dementia and strokes.
