The ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2040 relies on the mining sector discovering deposits of precious minerals

With Britain joining France in pledging to ban sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2040, the government has stated it will invest more than £800m in driverless and clean technology.

BMW recently announced that they are building a fully EV of the Mini from 2019 while Volvo publicised that from the same year all of its new models will have an electric motor.

Although, the road to a promised land of zero emission vehicles has several bumps it needs to overcome. Battery makers are finding it difficult to secure the supplies needed to power such large packs - mainly cobalt and lithium. The hopes of this dream rely on the mining sector discovering more deposits of these precious minerals.

Miners are confident that more deposits exist – but they still need to find them.
