The Climate Change Paris Agreement comes into force today

The Climate Change Paris Agreement comes into force today, marking the first time that governments have legally agreed on limiting global temperatures.

The agreement has been acclaimed as a momentous step in the right direction.

All governments that have endorsed the agreement (including the US, EU, China and India) are responsible for holding global warming at no more than 2C above pre-industrial levels. This limit is what scientists regard as safe for our planet. Beyond these limits, climate change could become disastrous.

While countries have committed to curb their emissions, many environmental groups do not believe it is enough and are urging governments to do more.

Next week, governments will gather in Morocco to discuss how they are going to put the Paris agreements into place. The Paris accord is a turning point in our history thus far, signalling the beginning of a more sustainable future.
