The elimination of plastic bags came as a surprise for San Diego shoppers

Changes at San Diego stores regarding the elimination of plastic bags and charging for paper bags has come as a surprise to many shoppers.

The plastic bag ban (Proposition 67) was passed last week by capturing 52% of the vote.

While the law doesn’t come into place officially until December 9th, many store chains have already started the process for eliminating plastic bags and charging for reusable or paper bags.

The new law only affects stores which sell groceries, liquor or pharmacies and it currently doesn’t outline how much should be charged for reusable / paper bags, however it does state that they should be at least 10 cents.

While many shoppers do not necessarily disagree with the new law, they were not prepared for the switch to happen quite as quickly as it did with some shoppers using storage containers to haul their items to their car.
