The debate on whether airline overhead storage should be locked or not included at all has sparked from recent events where passengers paid more attention to gathering their belongings, and subsequently putting their lives at risk, than to the warnings of airline staff.

The most recent incident happened last week when a fire broke out on an Emirates airplane in Dubai. Thankfully, all passengers and staff were able to escape before the plane was devoured by flames however staff remarked that even after they told passengers not to retrieve their luggage, they simply just didn’t pay attention.

Two similar incidents occurred last year, indicating that something should be done in order to maintain the safety of passengers and airline staff.

Airlines are now debating whether to keep overhead storage locked at all times or to have no overhead storage at all.

In the first option, staff would have the control of unlocking the overhead storage once the airline has safely landed and passengers are ready to depart. The second option work's on the idea that all luggage will go into the airplanes central storage area while also creating a more spacious environment for passengers.

While nothing has yet to be decided, and it is unlikely that a decision will be made quickly, Green Motion car rental would like to again advise customers not to put their possessions above their safety.

What most people fail to grasp is that by stopping to collect your luggage, you can be wasting the few seconds you need to ensure not only your safety but also the safety of those around you.
