Traffic on British roads has reached a new record for the year according to draft estimates from the Department for Transport.

In the past 12 months, there were around 320 billion vehicle miles travelled on the network which is 1.4% higher than the previous year. Annual motor vehicle traffic has increased each quarter within the last 15 quarters.

Car traffic has increased by 0.9% to 249.4 billion, van traffic has risen by 3.8% to 48.2 billion and HGV grew by 3.4% to 17.1 billion.

In terms of roads, motorway traffic has increased by 2.5% to 67.7 billion, A roads rose 2.1% to 93.1 billion and urban A roads grew by 0.9% to 50.2 billion.

Road traffic trends are affected by a wide range of factors including the country’s population, individual travel choices and the greater demand for services / goods.
