Travelling now the UK has left the EU

Travelling now the UK has left the EU

Following the UK’s exit from the European Union on 31st December, we’ve put together some information on how this will affect travel both to and from the UK globally and what you need to do if you have booked a rental with us and your plans will now change.

We of course encourage everyone to follow local guidance regarding travel and respect restrictions in place in your country of residence. As COVID-19 restrictions ease up and travel becomes safer, travel will be mostly business as usual but there are some things to consider.

Travelling from the UK

Travel from the UK is currently quite limited but there are some important things to remember:

✔️ You will NOT need a new passport. Your ‘red’ passport will be valid for travel until it expires when you will be issued with a ‘blue’ passport. Valid passports need to have 6 months left from the day of travel and be less than 10 years old. Waiting time for new passports can be lengthy, so check yours now so you’re prepared.

✔️ You can travel for 90 days in any 180-day period. If you were planning on travelling for a long period of time this could affect your plans, but normal holidays will be fine.

✔️ All European Health Insurance Card’s (EHIC) issued before the end of 2020 should be valid, but we highly recommend you take out separate travel insurance. Often it is covered by your bank as part of your current account, so it’s worth checking with them before you travel.

✔️ You can still drive in Europe but ensure you have your driving licence and passport with you – we already ask for this information so you do not need to provide us with any extra information.

❌ You will no longer be able to use the fast-track passport control queues at the airport and so you should allow for longer queue times. You may also need to show your return ticket and prove you have enough money for your stay, so it’s worth keeping these in your hand luggage to avoid further delays. You may also need to show your return ticket and prove you have enough money for your stay, so it’s worth keeping these in your hand luggage to avoid further delays.

❌ Mobile roaming charges – as of the end of January free roaming will not be guaranteed. We recommend checking with your hotel/B&B/destination if they have WiFi available.

Travelling into the UK

Again, please respect the local travel restrictions in your country and check your return trip (some countries you can travel to easily but will need to quarantine yourself on arrival to the country and back to your country for several days). Things to look out for:

✔️Check your passport is valid and ensure it will be valid for 6 months from your date of arrival. National ID cards will only be accepted in specific cases and it’s best to check this before you travel.

✔️If you are travelling for business, you probably won’t need to apply for a VISA. You will not need a VISA if you are visiting for meetings, events and conferences, and are permitted to stay for up to 6 months. If you are visiting to sell goods or take part in paid or unpaid work, you may need to apply for a VISA. Check before you travel.

✔️You can still drive in the UK but ensure you have your driving licence and passport with you – we already ask for this information so you do not need to provide us with any extra information. You will not need an international driving permit (IDP).

What if I need to cancel or amend my rental?

If you have booked a Premium Plus rental with us, you are able to cancel your rental without charge within 48 hours of your rental commencing. For any other bookings or if you wish to amend your rental, we will be as accommodating as we can so please do contact your rental branch to discuss any changes. You can also contact us directly on [email protected] and a member of the Green Motion International team can discuss your options with you.
