Uber drivers won the right to be categorised as workers rather than self-employed.
The ruling, which was made by a London employment tribunal, means that drivers of the app will now be entitled to the national minimum wage, holiday pay and be paid for their rest breaks.
This has been described as a monumental triumph for the 40,000 Uber drivers in the UK however Uber have said that they will appeal against the ruling which stated that they had acted unlawfully.
The company, which is based in San Francisco, were arguing that their drivers were not employees but were self-employed contractors.
The TUC said that the case was exposing the “dark side” of the labour market in the UK.
The response from Uber drivers themselves, while many are in agreement with the ruling, has been mixed; some have stated disappointment as they enjoyed the flexibility of 'being their boss.'
