United Nations Climate Summit 2020

United Nations Climate Summit 2020

2015 was a pivotal year for eco activists as the pioneering Paris agreement was introduced at the 21st annual United Nations Climate Summit in France. This critical treaty was presented as a way to strengthen the ethos behind the convention to raise awareness of the devastating consequences of global warming and to intensify the universal battle against climate change.

Although the meetings are held annually, the 26th Climate Change Conference will mark 5 years since the introduction of the Paris agreement, making the 2020 event a key landmark in the ongoing fight to protect our planet.

The government has said the event would be the largest summit ever hosted in the UK, with up to 30,000 delegates and 200 world leaders expected to attend the conference. It is considered to be the most crucial of all meetings so far as progress will be reviewed and countries are expected to submit updated climate change pledges that will contribute to the overall goal to hold global warming at below 2C.

The UK’s Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, Clair Perry, has now been appointed as provisional president of next year’s talks. Many are taking this as confirmation that the UK will be chosen to host the 2020 two-week conference after the UK struck a deal with main rival Italy. It has been discussed that Italy will host the preparatory meeting known as the pre-Cop, as well as a youth event whilst the main event will be held in the city of Glasgow. If you’re interested in being present at the Italian Pre-Cop or youth event around the time of these vital discussions, then please contact the Green Motion Italy rental stations in order to hire responsibly with Green Motion.

Ms Perry stated that as one of the UK’s most sustainable cities, “Glasgow is the right choice to showcase the UK’s commitment to the environment”. Since 1990, the UK have cut emissions by more than 40% and have committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Scotland challenged this by vowing to achieve net zero emissions by 2045, making it an obvious choice to host the event.

The summit is due to take place in November 2020, so if you fancy taking a stand and joining the hundreds of party heads and activists due to descend on Glasgow next year, then please travel eco-consciously and choose Green Motion Glasgow Car Hire. Every Green Motion hire includes a donation to our Green Heart Initiative that allows our customers to compensate for their environmental impact while driving one of our cars.
