Yesterday, water regulators in California extended their conservation measures. These measures have lingered from the drought after the US state’s wettest winter in years.
As a precaution, the regulators have decided to retain the measures until at least the spring as there is the possibility of dry weather yet to come.
Californians have heeded to the call to conserve water, with residents using roughly 20% less water in December compared to the same time period in 2013 (the year in which the drought emergency was announced).
Enough water has been preserved since the compulsory conservation began in June 2015 to provide to nearly 1/3 of the state’s current population for a year.
However, it is still not clear on when the water measure will be lifted.
