Yesterday, voters in Florida rejected the Amendment 1. The referendum, at face value, seemed to be designed to widen the use of solar power however, in reality, it sanctioned Florida’s utility companies to charge fees to solar power users – even if the solar panels are not pulling their power from the utilities grids.
Not surprising, the Amendment 1 was backed by 4 major power companies, being Florida Power & Light, TECO, Duke Energy and Gulf Power. These 4 companies have also donated roughly $21 million to champion the amendment, meaning it is the most expensive campaign in Florida’s history for a ballot measure.
The misleading language of the amendment confused many Florida voters prior to election day with many indicating that they would support the referendum however on election day, Floridians rejected the amendment.
