Green Motion Car Rental North Macedona Skopje International Airport 850x300

Your Skopje Travel Guide

We are delighted to now be able to offer you environmentally friendly car rental options in North Macedonia. Rich with culture, North Macedonia brings together its Balkan, Mediterranean, and Greek history to offer a place to visit that will not disappoint. We have started in the stunning Skopje, a great basecamp to start exploring the local area. The best way to get around is with a car rental, and we offer modern cars with leading technology, low emissions, and great price points.

Rich with custom and tradition, Skopje is a beautiful city with an archaeological history going back to 7000 years BC. It certainly deserves its title as the capital of North Macedonia, as you could stay here for a week and find something new and interesting to explore every day. Its mix of old and new merges perfectly together to provide something for all tastes. From the Kale Fortress and Old Bazaar located in the old town, to wine tours and the city mall – take a trip through time as you travel through the city.

Museums, Mosques, and Galleries

A short drive from Skopje is the beautiful Pasha's Mosque – a decorated mosque in Tetovo that has the most incredible ceiling and wall decoration that you simply have to see in person. Built in the 15th century, the mosque is a popular tourist spot, so we recommend arriving early to beat the queues.

Opened in 1974, the Ilinden Uprising Monument is quite a modern building for its time and is a rounded shape with protruding oval windows. The monument was built to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia and is open to the public for tours. If you can, visit on the 2nd of August to experience the annual Ilinden celebration.

Situated on top of a hill, surrounded by a beautiful panoramic view of the site, the Museum of Contemporary Art has an international and local national collection featuring the founders of Macedonian modern art: Dimitar Pandilov, Lazar Licenoski, Nikola Martinoski, and Dimo Todorovski, and is worth a visit while you’re exploring the city.

Food and drink

You have to try burek when in North Macedonia. It’s a delicious pastry filled with ground meat, cheese or spinach and is popular throughout the Balkans. Other Macedonian delights include sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), tavce gravce (seasoned baked beans), and musaka (ground beef and onion topped with layers of potato slices). There are restaurants in the city and surrounding areas, so you can be sure to find somewhere authentic to have your meals.

When it comes to drinking, if you enjoy a glass of wine with your evening meal make sure you book an early seating in the summer. In North Macedonia you can’t purchase alcohol after 7 pm in the summer, and 9 pm in the winter. Turkish coffee is quite popular, as well as teas made from local herbs, so you can finish off your meal with a warm drink.

Exploring Outdoors

If you want to experience the great outdoors, there are plenty of areas in North Macedonia that you can visit. Head west to Mount Rasa where you can take on the 10-mile hike up the mountain, with an elevation of 1354m. If the water is more your thing, there is kayaking at Matka Canyon where you may even discover the hidden cave and experience the song of nature on the quiet lake.

And for those of you that want a bit of both, Vrelo Cave is for you! The second deepest cave in Europe, it still hasn’t been fully explored. You can sign up for a tour of the cave, where a well-informed guide will talk you through the history and explain the natural formations that you can see in the cave. You can also stay above water and take a boat trip through the canyon, where you can see the plants, butterflies, spiders, and even scorpions that inhabit the area.

Mavrovo National Park

A popular spot for weekend trips, Mavrovo is set in beautiful scenery and brings the delights of nature all together in one place. Its breath-taking lake is surrounded by gorgeous greenery and snowy mountain peaks and is home to the highest waterfall in the Balkans. There are plenty of walkways and routes to explore where you can enjoy nature at its finest. If you’re lucky, you may even spot one of the 40 species that are near-extinct that live in the park, including the Eurasian Lynx.

Make sure you include a visit to Jovan Bigorski monastery, one of the most remarkable monasteries in Macedonia. It has a beautiful view out onto the park and is home to the iconostasis, created by Petre Filipovksi, a stunning wood-carved masterpiece. In the colder months, the ski centre is one of the most popular in Macedonia. Mavrovo village sits at an altitude of 1,300-1,900m and has 25km of slopes, 14 lifts, and room for over 5,000 people.

There are of course many other fantastic places to visit and explore in North Macedonia that are best explored with a rental car, and we look forward to helping you on your travels soon!
