Since September, blazes have swept the continent of Australia leaving their human, vegetation and animal population in complete devastation. Almost 2,000 homes have been destroyed, at least 25 people have died and almost half a billion animals have been murdered by the unforgiving flames. In an attempt to calm anger amongst the public, the continent’s president is claiming that it is simply ‘bushfire’ season and that the fires are not to do with global warming. This has enraged masses of people across the world has who remain dumbfounded by the government’s lacklustre response to the destruction.
To raise awareness and to try and assist with the ongoing fires, many celebrities including Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, have donated to the cause alongside messages urging their fans to give any donation that they can afford. British singer, Pink, donated $500,000 to the servicemen (most of whom are volunteers) battling the blazes, as well as sharing a list of fire and community services in need of donations across Australia.
Here are a few organisations in desperate need of your item and monetary donations -
Whilst the fires have caused ruin for countless species of native animal, many birds and reptiles have been able to escape danger by flying or burrowing underground. Unfortunately, it is mammals such as Koalas and Kangaroos that are unable to outrun the flames, leaving them very vulnerable. Both species are in equal danger with some suggesting that this disaster could lead to a species extinction, but Koalas are apparently far less likely to note the fire as a threat until it is too late to escape.
Green Motion are currently fundraising for the Australian Koala Hospital within their International head office in order to adopt and care for Koalas rescued from the fires, you can do the same here. https://www.koalahospital.org.au/product-category/adoptions
