Frozen food specialist Iceland has today announced its commitment to eradicate plastic packaging from its own brand products. The first major retailer globally to go ‘plastic free’, this move by Iceland will be welcomed by environmental campaigners as well as the general public amid recent increasing concerns about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.
Richard Lowden, Green Motion CEO and Founder said, “At Green Motion, our entire ethos is built on a genuine intention to reduce CO2 emissions and care for our environment so we fully support this ground-breaking move by Iceland and look forward to seeing other retailers follow suit.
We are very proud of how Green Motion paved the way for sustainable and environmentally friendly car rental; now in our 11th year we are really starting to see the other major car hire companies follow our lead, investing in low emission fleets.”
Iceland is one of 30 countries where Green Motion operates, and the recent sharp rise in visitors to the country has caused concerns about the effects that this might have on the largely pristine Icelandic highlands; in 2016 alone the number of people passing through Keflavik airport jumped by 40%.
The Green Motion teams at Keflavik International Airport and in Reyjavik know very well the importance of mitigating the effects of travel on the environment, and welcome the increase in visitors to their scenic country whilst also providing the lowest emission rental car fleet that they can to support the growth of sustainable tourism.
