The Dubai Air Show – Can You Fly Green?

The Dubai Air Show is an event held every few years that offers a meeting place for professionals involved in the aerospace industry. Attendees in previous years have witnessed talks on technological developments and industry progression, however, this year saw a huge focus on making the aviation industry greener.

With a similar focus, Green Motion very recently became the first carbon neutral car rental company in the UK

Many companies promoted how they would begin offsetting their carbon footprints at the event, including the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways (In partnership with Boeing) who announced their strategies to tackle climate change. As part of these changes, the two companies have renamed a ‘’Dreamliner’’ aircraft as the ‘Greenliner’’ due to the sustainable improvements made to the vessel.

These improvements are being researched endlessly by industry leaders who have invested in new developments such as rethinking aircraft aerodynamics, changes to ways aircraft taxi on runways, lighter materials and Bio-Fuels.

Despite these solutions, the key issue faced by the aviation industry is that companies often have to operate under ‘wafer-thin’ profit margins in order to maintain competitive rates, this means that corporations are unlikely to adopt anything that would increase costs. However, it is expected that the price of Bio-Fuel will continue to decrease as more is invested to refine these products.

Several other ideas are being considered by industry leads such as experiments involving aircrafts flying behind one another, allowing the planes to reduce engine thrust. It is claimed that this can save up to 5-10% in fuel consumption. Similarly, if an aircraft descends into an airport at a constant rate it can supposedly save about 150 kilograms of carbon!

With new research and sustainable options becoming more readily available, it is expected that the aviation industry undergo a huge transformation in the next few years. Whilst most companies in the travel industry are beginning to take note of how they can become more environmentally efficient, Green Motion continues to spearhead the Green Tourism Revolution.
