Car hire in Zagreb Airport

Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (ZAG) is Croatia’s largest and busiest airport, located about 15 kilometers southeast of the city center. It serves as a key hub for domestic and international flights, offering modern facilities including shops, restaurants, and car rental services.

The airport provides regular shuttle bus services connecting passengers to the city center, making it a convenient gateway for travelers visiting Zagreb and other parts of Croatia.

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a lively city that combines historic charm with modern attractions.

You can visit Lake Jarun and start your trip with windsurfing or canoeing. Want something more relaxing? Grab a drink from one of the many cafes next door, maybe even visit their most popular nightclub, Aquarius, and keep the fun going.

Perhaps you want some fun for the family to enjoy, we recommend taking a trip to Maksimir park and enjoying the utopia of towering trees and bright blue skies. Whilst you are there, you must take a wander to the Zagreb Zoo which prides itself on protecting the homes and habitats of the animals surrounding it.

There’s no better way to do all this, than with one of our environmentally friendly car rentals. We offer low C02 vehicles that you can get straight from the airport and set off on this fun-filled adventure.

Tips for renting a car in Zagreb Airport

Before you rent
Choose wisely. In 2019 we introduced our multi-product system which helps you choose a car based on your needs and easily see the final price. Car rental insurance can be tricky to navigate and often isn't what you expect, by booking with us direct you'll receive the correct insurance for your rental.

When you collect your vehicle
Plan ahead. We recommend planning your route before you leave, especially when renting a car at an airport. Are you sure where you're meeting your chaperone or where the rental desk is? Your confirmation email will have the contact information for the location, so we suggest saving the number in your phone ahead of time.

Have the correct documents ready. We try and keep the check in process as painless as possible but we do need to process certain information for legal reasons so having these ready ahead of time can help speed up the process. Make sure you have your booking details ready, along with your driving licence, passport and valid credit card.

Complete a vehicle check. It's essential when you are taken to your car you complete a Vehicle Condition Report (VCR) and note any existing damage, paying particular attention to the five damage hotspots. If you don't report this, you may be liable for these damages when you return the vehicle. We don't want you to get caught out, so we've put together a handy vehicle inspection video to help you check everything thoroughly.

While you rent
Take care. Unfortunately you may be liable for any damage caused to a vehicle in your care, and this will vary depending on the product you choose. A large proportion of damages to any car can be dings you pick up in car parks, so be mindful when space is limited and park further away and walk a little further to your destination.

When you return your vehicle
Complete a vehicle check. It's time to carry out a VCR again and even more essential to fully log any damage, no matter how small, to ensure you are fully covered and we can process your return effectively. Be sure to check the vehicle as before, paying special attention to the five damage hotspots.

In Croatia, driving is on the right-hand side. A valid driving license from your home country is required, and depending on your country of origin, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

The speed limits in Croatia are generally 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on secondary roads, and 130 km/h on highways, subject to change based on road conditions and signage.

From November 15 to April 15, winter tires or snow chains are mandatory on certain roads, especially in mountainous areas. By law, vehicles in Croatia must carry a reflective safety vest and a warning triangle. These should be used in case of breakdowns or accidents. But don't worry – we take care of those, if you choose our rental car!

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05% for drivers over 24 years of age. For drivers under 24 years old, the limit is 0.00%. Penalties for driving under the influence are strict and can include heavy fines, license suspension, or imprisonment.

Drivers must stop for pedestrians at marked crosswalks, as pedestrians always have the right of way.

In urban areas, pay attention to parking zones marked by different colors: blue zones indicate paid parking, while yellow zones are reserved for specific uses (like deliveries or disabled parking).

While fuel stations are readily available in cities and along highways, they may be less frequent in remote or rural areas. It is advisable to fill up your tank when traveling to less-populated regions.

Croatia has a network of toll roads (autoceste) that connect major cities and regions. Tolls can be paid in cash, by credit card, or through the ENC electronic toll collection system.
The toll system applies throughout Croatia, including for travel from Zagreb to other cities like Split or Dubrovnik.
