Curaçao, a vibrant island in the southern Caribbean Sea, is known for its colorful Dutch colonial architecture, white-sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Willemstad, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with culture, art, and history. The island is compact and easy to explore, making it ideal for a road trip.
Renting a car from Curaçao Airport gives you the freedom to explore the entire island at your own pace. From the turquoise bays on the west coast like Cas Abao and Playa Kenepa to the lively restaurants and museums in Willemstad, having your own wheels is the best way to experience the island's full range of attractions. Public transportation is limited and infrequent, especially to the island’s more remote beaches and national parks.
Before you rent
Choose wisely. In 2019 we introduced our multi-product system which helps you choose a car based on your needs and easily see the final price. Car rental insurance can be tricky to navigate and often isn't what you expect, by booking with us direct you'll receive the correct insurance for your rental.
When you collect your vehicle
Plan ahead. We recommend planning your route before you leave, especially when renting a car at an airport. Are you sure where you're meeting your chaperone or where the rental desk is? Your confirmation email will have the contact information for the location, so we suggest saving the number in your phone ahead of time.
Have the correct documents ready. We try and keep the check in process as painless as possible but we do need to process certain information for legal reasons so having these ready ahead of time can help speed up the process. Make sure you have your booking details ready, along with your driving licence, passport and valid credit card.
Complete a vehicle check. It's essential when you are taken to your car you complete a Vehicle Condition Report (VCR) and note any existing damage, paying particular attention to the five damage hotspots. If you don't report this, you may be liable for these damages when you return the vehicle. We don't want you to get caught out, so we've put together a handy vehicle inspection video to help you check everything thoroughly.
While you rent
Take care. Unfortunately you may be liable for any damage caused to a vehicle in your care, and this will vary depending on the product you choose. A large proportion of damages to any car can be dings you pick up in car parks, so be mindful when space is limited and park further away and walk a little further to your destination.
When you return your vehicle
Complete a vehicle check. It's time to carry out a VCR again and even more essential to fully log any damage, no matter how small, to ensure you are fully covered and we can process your return effectively. Be sure to check the vehicle as before, paying special attention to the five damage hotspots.

Great experience renting with Green Motion. Bas was waiting waiting patiently for our arrival that was delayed an hour. Took great care of us explaining the rules of the road in Curacao. Renting is a must in Curacao so you aren't just stuck on the resort. Such a beautiful island, the people and vibe are great. Would definitely rent from Green Motion again, hope we can get another visit planned soon.

Muy buen servicio de autos! Económico, y la atención bastante buena. No tomamos el seguro con ellos ya que podía tomarlo con mi tarjeta de crédito, aún así no hubo ningún inconveniente al momento de la entrega.
Driving in Curaçao is generally safe and straightforward for international visitors. Roads are paved and maintained reasonably well, especially between the airport, Willemstad, and the major beach areas. However, some rural or coastal roads can be narrow or have potholes, so drive cautiously outside urban areas.
Traffic drives on the right-hand side, and most road signs follow international standards. Roundabouts are common, and vehicles in the roundabout typically have the right of way, though local drivers might not always follow the rules strictly. Always drive defensively and be patient—driving culture can be relaxed but unpredictable at times.
Speed limits:
Urban areas: 40–50 km/h (25–31 mph)
Outside towns: 60–80 km/h (37–50 mph)
Highways (like Weg naar Westpunt): up to 80 km/h (50 mph)
There are no toll roads in Curaçao, and driving licenses from most countries (including the US and EU nations) are accepted. No International Driving Permit (IDP) is typically required unless your license is in a non-Latin alphabet.
Parking in Willemstad is generally available but often paid—look for zones labeled as "parkmeter". Always lock your car and avoid leaving valuables inside. In beach areas, parking is usually free but unmonitored.
Fuel stations are common and offer both full-service and self-service options. Most accept credit cards, but carrying some cash (Netherlands Antillean guilder or US dollars) is useful, especially in remote parts of the island.
In case of emergency, dial 911 for police or 912 for ambulance and fire services.
