UK engineering consultancy Drive System Design is in the process of developing a highly-efficient, multi-speed electric vehicle powertrain, named MSYS, the Green Car Website wrote on its blog.
Last week, the company presented a paper titled 'High efficiency electric vehicle powertrain,' at the Future Powertrain Conference in Solihull, UK.
MSYS uses an innovative powershift system that prevents torque interruption during shifts, ensuring ultra-smooth shifting and a considerable reduction of energy consumption compared to traditional methods. The powertrain, which is based on an axial flux from YASA Motor with a multi-speed transmission, has three speed gearings that use overlap shift technology.
Drive System Design has said that the new powertrain could reduce vehicle energy consumption by 10% to 15%, compared to a single-speed electric vehicle transmission or hybrid electric vehicle transmission.
The Green Car Website cited Drive System Design's technical director, Alex Tylee-Birdall, as saying that MSYS would be able to supply 55kW of continuous power, over 91% electric powertrain efficiency and over 2,000Nm of torque. In order to highlight the efficiency benefits of the powershifting system, he compared it to conventional automatic transmissions, including the dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which needs energy constantly in order to maintain clutches in the open or closed position.
Series production of MSYS is expected to be launched in the last quarter of 2016. In order to meet the needs of different target sectors, MSYS will be offered in several versions with different power and torque outputs, Drive System Design has said previously.
