Electric vehicles could overtake sales of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2027, according to analysis undertaken by Go Ultra Low.
The first quarter of 2016 was marked as the best-ever period for electric car sales since the government’s Plug-in Car Grant was introduced, with over 10,000 electric car sales. The government and industry-backed campaign predicts that there will be 1.3 million new yearly EV sales in a decade’s time.
Between 2011 and 2015, the Plug-in Car Grant offered a subsidy towards an electric or plug-in vehicle and helped to grow electric car sales. Experts have said that the industry is at a “tipping point”. The findings reaffirm this and suggest that the government is on course to meet their aim for all new cars and vans to have ultra-low emissions by 2040.
“The monumental interest in electric vehicles and their subsequent rapid rise in uptake has been spectacular so far, with more than 60,000 EVs registered in the past five years,” commented Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low. “These rises are just the start of the electric revolution, as analysis suggests that electric vehicles could dominate the new car markets as early as 2027.”
With the majority of the UK being motorists suited to electric motoring, more electric vehicles on the road would benefit drivers and our environment. Before committing to a purchase of a low-emission vehicle, it is advisable to test the car in your day to day life - making sure that the vehicle suits your needs.
