It has been announced by Highways England that the UK will begin trials of wireless charging technology embedded into road surfaces, to charge electric and hybrid vehicles.
The trials will test how the technology could work on motorways and A roads across the UK. Off-road testing is anticipated to take 18 months, and if successful, could be followed by on-road trials.
The off-road research has been organised as part of the government’s objective to encourage take-up of ultra-low emissions vehicles in the UK. Take up is currently limited by range in motorway driving situations.
Transport Minister Andrew Jones commented on the plans: “The potential to recharge low emission vehicles on the move offers exciting possibilities. The government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology, which will help boost jobs and growth in the sector.
“As this study shows, we continue to explore options on how to improve journeys and make low-emission vehicles accessible to families and business.”
