Air pollution levels in Leicester are decreasing but a new study has found that they are still exceeding recommended levels.
The EU’s regulations state that nitrogen dioxide levels should not exceed 40mg per cubic metre of air in order to prevent the likelihood of lung disease. Data released by the city council shows that levels in Leicester reach 53mg, surpassing the set target.
Officials have said that the situation is improving and levels are expected to reach 39mg by 2020 – multi-million pound fines could be imposed if the city is above the limit by this time.
The council has recently adopted a 10-year plan which aims to reduce air pollution. The plan includes setting up more charging networks around the city and creating low emission zones for buses in the centre.
Although on track, there is still a long way to go to reach a healthier pollution level. By hiring a car or van from Green Motion you play a part in helping to reducing emissions levels, while benefitting from better fuel economy.
