439 buses across England will be fitted with green technology, resulting in a cut of harmful emissions by up to 90 per cent.
The Clean Bus Technology Fund 2015 will be awarded to 18 local authorities across England, enabling the new buses to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The new vehicles will at first, target areas in England with the highest amount of pollution.
It is expected that the move will significantly improve air quality in town and city centres. This is justified by the estimation that the upgraded buses will complete more than one million journeys annually.
Andrew Jones, Transport Minister, said “Greener buses mean cleaner town and city centres and a healthier environment for everyone. The upgraded buses that will soon hit the roads in England continue our commitment to better air quality by investing in greener transport.”
The move comes following the news of successful bids for an estimated £7 million of Department for Transport (DfT) funding.
The Clean Bus Funding is a central part of the government’s commitment to green transport which has seen £2 billion worth of measures introduced since 2011.
