Good to know when renting a car in Bonaire

Driving in Bonaire is relatively relaxed and enjoyable, especially outside of the main town. Roads are usually narrow but quiet, and most people drive courteously and slowly. The island follows right-hand traffic, like the U.S. and mainland Europe.

A valid driver’s license from your home country is sufficient to rent and drive a car in Bonaire. No International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for most nationalities if your license is in the Latin alphabet.

There are no traffic lights on the island. Instead, intersections are governed by right-of-way rules: traffic from the right has priority unless otherwise indicated.

Speed limits on Bonaire are 40 km/h (25 mph) in towns, and 60 km/h (37 mph) outside built-up areas.

However, these are not always clearly marked, so driving cautiously is recommended. Note that many roads — especially those leading to dive spots or through Washington Slagbaai National Park — are unpaved and rough, so high-clearance vehicles are a plus.

Roundabouts are common in Kralendijk, and you yield to traffic already in the roundabout. There is no street lighting in rural areas, so avoid nighttime driving outside of town.

Fuel stations are available in Kralendijk and along main roads. Most accept credit cards, but it’s good to carry some cash in U.S. dollars for smaller purchases or emergencies.

Parking is free nearly everywhere on the island. There are no parking meters, and you can leave your car along roadsides or in public lots — just avoid blocking driveways or designated loading zones.

There are no major toll roads, and car insurance is typically required by rental companies. Make sure to inspect the car for any pre-existing damage before heading out.

Why Rent a Car in Bonaire?

Bonaire may be small, but a rental car is by far the best way to explore the island. Public transportation is virtually nonexistent, and while some areas are walkable, the real beauty of Bonaire lies in its remote beaches, wild landscapes, and inland trails that are best accessed by car.

Yes. Traffic is calm, roads are relatively quiet, and locals drive courteously. Use extra caution on unpaved roads.

Are road signs in English in Bonaire?

Most signs are international symbols. Language on signs is usually in Dutch, but they are easy to understand.

Are there any unusual driving rules or customs in Bonaire?

There are no traffic lights. You must yield to the right at intersections unless otherwise posted. Also, don't be surprised if donkeys or goats are on the road — wildlife is common in rural areas.

Can I drive around the entire island of Bonaire in a day?

Yes. Bonaire is compact, and you can easily explore the island's highlights in a day or two by car.

What kind of car should I rent in Bonaire?

If you're staying mainly in Kralendijk or visiting well-paved routes, a regular compact or sedan is fine. However, if you plan to explore Washington Slagbaai National Park, dive sites, or other rugged areas, a high-clearance SUV or pickup truck is highly recommended to handle unpaved and rocky roads.

How long does it take to drive from the airport to Kralendijk?

Only about 5 to 10 minutes, as the airport is located just outside the main town.
