A new £35 million fund to help boost the uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles across the UK has been announced by Transport Minister John Hayes.
The amount will be divided across a number of areas: £20m has been allocated to help councils roll out charging points for taxis, £10m is for charge points outside of workplaces and homes, £2m is allocated to organisations to deploy hydrogen fuel cells and £3.75m to encourage uptake in zero emission motorcycles and scooters.
“The number of ultra-low emission vehicles on our roads are at record levels and new registrations have risen by 250 per cent in just over two years,” said John Hayes. “We are committing £35 million to help install new charge points and offer new grants as we aim for nearly all cars and vans on our roads to be zero emission by 2050.”
UK EV charging points
The new funding commitment will potentially see thousands more electric charging points across the UK on the streets and at people’s places of work.
There are currently more than 12,000 chargers in the UK and we expect there to be a rise in the number of UK charging points in the coming years. Oil giant Shell recently revealed discussions with government officials about introducing them at their gas stations.
Applications like Zap Map make it easy for UK EV drivers to locate charging points and give the opportunity to plan stop-offs on their route. Government funding will enable councils to implement charging points, making it even easier for our renters to find a place to charge up their vehicle.
