Following a number of rumours circulating around the subject, government documents have revealed that vacuum manufacturer Dyson is planning to develop an electric car.
The ambitious plan will pose a potential challenge to the Tesla electric motors, which have proved to be a success. The filed patents show that the Dyson vehicle may use solid-state batteries – such a move would see the vehicle’s range reach hundreds of miles.
Current electric car batteries are expensive and cannot drive the same distance as a petrol or diesel vehicle on a single charge. Solid-state batteries would provide a tenfold increase in energy density. Last year Dyson also purchased Sakti3, a solid-state battery developer
The National Infrastructure Delivery Plan disclosed “The government is funding Dyson to develop a new battery electric vehicle at their headquarters in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. This will secure £174m of investment in the area, creating over 500 jobs, mostly in engineering.”
Dyson prides itself on innovation and is often the front runner in advancement and developments. In 2014, James Dyson, founder of Dyson, pledged that his company would spend £1.5bn on research to create future products – aiming to launch 100 new electrical products by 2018. It now seems that one of these electric products could be an EV.
We’re looking forward to hearing an official announcement from Dyson on the plans and hopefully seeing some prototypes and images in the near future.
