The on-site taxi firm at Gatwick Airport, Airport Cars, has announced plans to replace all its 250 vehicle fleet with electric vehicles by 2020.
A tester batch of Tesla S models have been ordered and the firm will test their suitability through 2017. The company drives approximately 12 million miles per year on around 350,000 journeys, resulting in 2,600 tonnes of carbon emissions – it is hoped that this figure will be halved as a result of the change. Charging points will also be installed at Gatwick Airport.
London’s pollution
Efforts are now being made by a number of companies to help tackle the capital’s pollution problems, which have been addressed numerous time by Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London.
Announcing plans to minimise the toxic levels, Sadiq Khan commented: “With nearly 10,000 people dying early every year in London due to exposure to air pollution, cleaning up London’s toxic air is now an issue of life and death. It’s our turn to act for the good of Londoners and for future generations to come.”
